As the world’s largest book digitization project, Google Books provides incomparable coverage. Most volumes published before 1923 are available to view with fully searchable text and are downloadable as pdf files. However, books published between 1880 and 1922 are normally unavailable to view when searching from outside the United States. The entries without full text, which include most works published after 1923, contain useful bibliographic information and “snippet views”. Search results can be restricted to show only full-text results. A full-text search for “Ceylon” yields hundreds of volumes from works of fiction to colonial memoirs to government reports. Coverage is limited to holdings found in U.S. research libraries.
