This archive is part of the University of Toronto, Scarborough Library’s “Digital Tamil Studies” initiative. The digitized material represents a selection of documents from the full Chelvanayakam collection housed at the library. The digitized portion contains papers from S.J.V. Chelvanayakam’s career as a leading Tamil politician in Sri Lanka during the mid-twentieth century. The documents include not only Chelvanayakam’s words, but also those of other leaders from the ITAK political party, such as A. Amirthalingam. The papers consist of correspondence and resolutions in Tamil and English, including handwritten and typed documents. These include letters among party members and to and from government departments, denouncements of Sri Lanka’s Sinhala-majoritarian politics, and complaints against the police and military, as well asmore mundane ephemera of everyday life, such as bank statements, hotel bills, and other receipts.
